J24 - Philae Temple / High Dam

Morning "visit".
We find a taxi to visit sites in southern Aswan. The driver is of Palestinian origin. With Abed, that makes two Palestinians met in no time. Watered by the info we are, we'd almost forgotten that Palestine does not live with terrorists and religious, but that's a whole population which consists in its richness and diversity !
Philae. First stop on our little journey. Another famous temple moved by UNESCO with Abu Simbel. On this small island between the new and the old dam, stands a beautifully preserved temple. The only problem for travelers "out group" is access. Hundreds of boats make the connection between land and the island but there is no fixed price and we have a little fear whatsoever "to the client's head." We have a group of Italians who agree that we join them. The advantage of course is that you do not pay, the group leader declining my offer. The disadvantage is that we are witnessing incredible scenes or children to sell the same boat of wooden jewelry, tools, all in euros ... I find irresponsible attitude of those people who, probably through ignorance or by lack of opportunity, jump on these opportunities to make their purchases. We now understand better why we do not stop "aggression" to sell us anything and everything ...

Landing. The temple exudes a serene atmosphere. Masterfully moved, reassembled and restored, we appreciate parts to finally have a roof, which should be much more faithful to the temple as it was during its construction!

In video ...

Later, a monument English very borders the Nile. Behind you can see its old location. Indeed it would have been a shame to lose such a legacy.

One last picture before you go ...

High Dam. Back to the taxi that was sought in the meantime his wife and head for the famous High Dam. Would such an early recognition of the fair sex than to enjoy an outing to the city to get them "out" a little? Entry fee for the dam just a few meters. Not so impressive that it actually except Lake Nasser with his deep blue slice in the middle of the desert!
Russo-Egyptian monument in true communist style with hammer and sickle, shape and futuristic slender concrete.
Unfinished Obelisk. The scam of the day. We knew it would be of little interest to see an obelisk in a career and that was the case! It's interesting to walk in the place where all were extracted stones that have "made the Pharaonic Egypt," but there's nothing to see.
The sole interest of maintaining the site visits is to force people to cross out a "souk" for tourists and sought to steal some tickets.
Back to the hotel and nap.
Souk. We decide to go do some shopping in the souk in Aswan. What a disappointment! or increased the reputation as the city of Aswan with a souk millennium, at the crossroads between Africa and the Arab world, with all traders Nubian? Here everything is junk "Made in China". Not a step without a "Hello " or " Hallo" or "Where are you from ? " Excuse me, good price! "One pound only "... Well it's delusional. We look at the jewelry. Everything is "pharaonisé" with the cross of life, Tutankhamun, hieroglyphs. It's ugly and does not give us want to buy.
Sunset from the roof of our hotel with a couple of South Africans, Emma and Flo, who begin a world tour for 1 year. (Their travel blog, 1 life live it - One life, live it! )

Cutting Letters From Mat Board

Upper Egypt ... grrr!

Hi all our readers!

Small development of avanr begin to tell you our latest adventures, photos are not ours! Indeed it would be too complicated in a cyber cafe to upload our images, especially since the speed of the internet is not always there and that you should cables etc. ...

Since the last message sent to Luxor, we slowed the pace pa evil because
- it's hot (but less than in the desert)
- we are tired
- ruins ca drunk at the end of a time
- Upper Egypt (ie the upper nil) c is a haven for touts of all kinds (felloques, taxis, calleches, boats ...) and that each trip is almost a cross to bear!

Resume of our 4 day tour of Luxor
famous temples of Karnak and Luxor . Beautiful every 2, and always very well restored with almost any group ... what needs to be a luxury cruises in winter or should unload tourists operatorise round all day long. No longer believe what we tell: the egypt in summer this is not a thing for crazy, it's hot but certainly if we didn't have the air conditioning all day long in its boat / hotel in the bus in its restaurant ... s are used to it without any problem! QQ
photos ... not us!

Temple of Luxor ... with the world (we were alone!)

Temple of Karnak

Sunset from a fellouque on banana island, island or we walk in the bananas (and we eat or!)

The famous fellouques

Visit the Theban necropolis on the west bank of Luxor.
site has breathtaking c is so nice. The truth is that we love we walk on the mountains between the valley of kings and other sites but it was too hot vriament. The graves are beautiful and although like the pyramids of Giza are found a lot of people (day cultural people who chopent cancers of the skin on the beaches of Hurghada or Sharm el cheich) were never been more than 5 a time in the tombs. C is very beautiful but also very expensive!

The Valley ...

Detail of a painting

directtion Then (still in the same corner) lefameux Hatshepsut temple which once is not usual is smaller in real life in that picture ... even if it is even big enough ... qd brief here's a photo to get an idea .. false!

Encore 2 3 tips but I do not give the details ... c is the ruins a bit, after it sucks!! Drunk

of Luxor, we go south to Aswan hoping to find a little peace and other things to see

Aswan
Superb site at the first cataract (+ - fast on the Nile River and tighten with full of rocks)
For the moment we walk on Elephantine Island
Nubian village on Elephantine

and spent a day in the pool with a super mega hotel!

philae Tomorrow and the dam ... Finally, in theory!

Inch Allah!

you soon for further ;-)

J23 - Swimming on Isis Island

Day pool to Isis Island Hotel . Here too the Club Med made us feel good ... but it is closed during the summer. The direction along the Nile, private boat (Class!) And for 35 THE / pers. (5 €), here we go for a day of "rich", surrounded by rich ... Finally, some because there is no crowd!
Nice to bathe in the middle of the Nile with the sand-covered mountains in the distance. Great to finally cool off in water that does not come from a source, do not feel the suffering and does not stain your nails!
Isis Island Hotel ...
Only problem, it should be neither hungry nor thirsty! The consos are at exorbitant prices, the plate of chips is to 10x its normal price ... and so much is the price of a restaurant in France!
Apart from two families and some children paddling, we are surrounded by older people, which does not place very "Alive."
Walk in the Park hotel in the middle of the Nile ...

Dinner at Panorama Restaurant . Delicious fresh tomato juice and tagines.

Main expenses of the day (for 2):
Hotel : 55 THE
Water, snacks : 10
Journal: Entry 1 THE
pool : 35 LE / person (the Pier Isis Island Hotel can not miss. Departure shuttle Free, frequently. Arrived on the scene, head to the pools. We pay the server directly. Warning! consos VERY expensive. ditto for newspapers, Internet ...)
evening meal: 50 THE

Difference Between Cravats And Ascots

J22 - J21

Aswan discovered us in the morning opening curtains of the window of our room. Landscape contrasted with the very ledge at our feet, the Nile flowing through the islands and rocks, a strip of green land and the mountains and desert. A warm breeze swept the city. Before leaving, we walk, small change of hotel (El Salam -> Athor Hotel ). Facing, the second is cheaper and has a rooftop swimming pool!
Discover the cornice. Here as elsewhere, we get up on our way to harangue us " taxi? "Carriage ? "- E xcuse me, Where do you come from? France. -How are you? " Caleche? Maybe tomorrow! " Five Pounds! . We're starting to do less attention. Although it remains impossible to be quiet during more than 5 minutes, there is more good humor than Luxor. The Nile is beautiful and the cornice is much more beautiful.
As in Luxor by cons, it's very difficult to find boarding the ferry across to Elephantine among the motorboats and feluccas. We do this and go through to Elephantine Island.

Elephantine Island. Beautifull island in the middle of the Nile extends along much of the city. It is divided into three parts: the south, an area archaeological / museum in the middle of the Nubian villages surrounded by fields and the North a horrible hotel that disfigures the island and honors both airports style "control tower" s' applied to this building ...
Hotel horrible, really.
Panorama video ...

We start by visiting the museum does has little value. As usual, we'll watch keeper parts and tells us the following documents. We hesitate between laughter and excitement so it's ridiculous. Cons out by the large wooden house that houses the museum and its garden are more interesting.
On the other side of the Nile, the famous Cataract Hotel Death on the Nile rises majestically between the palm trees and large rounded rocks that line a Nile swirling.
Beautiful Old Cataract Hotel New Cataract Hotel and ugly .... What people think of time?
Having survived the tour by the caretaker, we wander in the vast archaeological zone at the tip of the island. Breathtaking view on small islands or the Club Med, restaurant and other hotels competing instead. Off into the mountains the mausoleum of the Aga Khan who enjoy the view on the city for eternity. The sun step but a little breeze refreshed us.
We continue exploring the island by crossing the Nubian villages . Even if everything is a bit deserted at this hour hot day, we discover colorful houses, surrounded by green fields.
Nobody comes to meet us. Surprising but very nice to finally take a walk quietly. The camera is in my hand and the pictures taken on the fly, without being seen, without aiming, so we do not want that tourism also eats there.
Behind Elephantine the Nile at the option of shining ripples separates us from the island of flowers. Since there is no boat to cross (this season or at this hour?), We do not go.

Back in town and short walk (but challenging with the rise and heat!). We climb in the hills above the town to a restaurant (the Nubian House Restaurant) dominating the first cataract.
Being on the ridge we can see another side of the city of Aswan that few tourists have seen. Huge quarries (which have supplied stone throughout pharaonic Egypt) and especially for poor buildings that stretch across the valley. Again, this is quite disturbing to see so much poverty rub wealth ... What rhymes ultimately our place here as tourists? We're helping these people to get out or do we instead favor the frustrations and inequalities ... Pause reading, writing and napping around a Karkade Tea, hibiscus flower, with no other tourists. Unforgettable sunset on the first cataract and green islands.
Back in the city center and lunch at Panorama Restaurant . Recommended by the Routard is actually our first restaurant a few "gourmet" in Egypt. Originality without being expensive. Moist atmosphere of the evening. A good shower is waiting ...
Main expenses of the day (for 2):
Stamps : 40 THE
Hotel : 55 LE (Athor Hotel. Not all the guides but clean enough and especially with a rooftop pool with panoramic views .... fantastic. Dej Breakfast included.)
Crossing : 4 (theoretically 1 LE / person /. .... by way necessarily obvious to enforce it's still very good but very cheap)
Museum: 20 THE
Resto evening : 50 THE
Bar: 16.5 ( Nubian House Restaurant attention nice view but in winter must be packed groups consumption VERY expensive!)
